Communion Bread Recipes

Basic Communion Bread Recipe

Serves approx. 150-200 pieces.

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 8 T oil
  • 7 T ice water
  • sugar to taste, optional

Set oven to 275F. 

  1. Blend flour and salt. Add oil and mix. Add ice water and blend completely.
  2. Knead a few times. Roll onto BOTTOM (underside) of cookie sheet to thickness of pie crust.
  3. Score into squares about 5/8" using a straight edge nd a pizza cutter or sharp knife. Bake at 275F until light golden color - about 50 minutes.
  4. Cool before breaking apart. Leave a few pieces unbroken for pastor to "break bread".
  5. Store in airtight container or bag.

Gluten-free (GF) Oat Crackers Recipe

Serves 80-100 pieces

  • 3 c. GF Quick Oats*
  • 2 cups GF oat flour (grind oats if you cannot find oat flour)
  • 1 T. organic raw cane Sugar
  • 1 ¼ tsp. Sea Salt
  • ¾ c. olive oil
  • 1 c. Water, warm

Set oven 325F.

  1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients  
  2. Grease a 10"x15"cookie sheet. Or, line with parchment paper. Or, powder pan with oat flour.
  3. Roll dough with a pastry roller.
  4. Cut out and mark off 1 .5 inch x 1 inch squares. Oat crackers can be crumbly.
  5. Bake for 40 minutes at 325 F (Optional: check half way through and turn over on the other side). 
  6. When done, re-score , if needed., and store very carefully in an airtight container.

*Using quick oats helps hold the cracker together. The rolled oats create a more crumbly cracker and thus should be cut into bigger squares. - 2"x1.5".

Gluten-free AND Oat-free Cracker Alternative

To offer an option that is free of all common allergens, the GF oat crackers is a good recipe. On rare occasion,  some members of our congregation may be unable to eat oats. The alternative is a crunchy rice cracker that may be found in health food stores and Amazon. Due to this special cracker, order in advance to ensure the option is available and arrives on time.
